Book Barbarian's Redemption (Ice Planet Barbarians Book 13) Review :

I've been loving most of this series, which I only read as a joke to see why on earth women would praise such a ridiculous storyline, but I ended up adoring it. I flew through the first 5 books and was impressed that the author could make me like each of the new love stories, but it's so repeatative and so many lame plot devices to change up the newer books that I am growing to dislike the whole series and the couples I once loved. Like Georgie and Vektal, the ones who hooked me? I loathe them. It's been building with every book, every little power trip they go on and lack of understanding for those without all the perfectness they've achieved, and they annoy me now that they can't get their heads out of their asses to just help Beck understand his actions. Instead, let's shun him. He doesn't even get it and they don't explain it. It's like punishing a one-year-old. He's made out to always be the villain, but I don't see that. He's lonely and lost. Even when he was introduced as the villain for Claire, I feared he'd hit her or do something really bad, but he walked away when she resonated. No fight. COngratulated them even though it obviously hurt. I get he wasn't nice, but I also get his frustration to see everyone getting happy mates, and he's got a woman who just offered her body to him then panicked. He's made out to be a creep for gifting Claire stuff in one of the earlier books, and he does have those "what if" thoughts, but he's attempting to make amends. He wants her friendship and just wants to be accepted. Now we have him making a mistake, but it's too clear he doesn't understand how this is wrong. He didn't ask for women to be abducted or to buy slaves. He didn't even know what he gave the other aliens that counted as money. He just asked for women to be brought because he thinks that is a solution. It's not right, but it's not malicious. Despite this, though, it's like the author suddenly remembered she wanted him to be the bad guy, and he admits he has no regrets for "stealing" the women and that it's just he got what he wanted. This doesn't match up to his understanding earlier in the book. And they all know resonating is impossible to fight. they're all a bunch of the horniest beings, and multiple males have done worse than him. So, it's annoying to see a bunch of holier than thou tribemates who rub in the face of others how good they have it and judging him. Then there's Ellie, his mate. She's had a rough life being kidnapped at 13 and clearly physically but never been abused. She makes herself seem wild and she's treated like a wild animal, a dog. I get it, she's surviving and no one wants to be raped, but when you're not being mistreated and still act like a loon, I have no sympathy for you. If you're hungry and none of your companions are showing signs of being drugged, you eat. Not exactly doing this for survival if you're dying of starvation. Her mistrust just doesn't feel genuine. It feels stupid. If the author wanted the reader to understand her, it should've been shown instead of assumed that we'd get her fear. Being told she was taken at 13 and forced to crawl around sucks, but I don't understand it. I don't know what that feels like, so it needs to be expressed in a way the readers understand. Being dirty and resistant as a slave isn't going to earn you an easy ride. It's not right, but she's certainly not helping her situation by acting like a rabid animal. 13 is old enough to know the basics of how to act, I guess, and if you act like a dirty animal, you get treated like one. Sorry. It just feels like the author is pulling plots from a bag and forcing it, and it's not working. Well, it is for the blue alien fan club but sadly, Ruby Dixon is becoming an author I don't want to read. You can tell when someone is writing for the sake of writing to get a paycheck, and this is what it feels like.
This installment in Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarian series was a solid installment. Her writing in these books seems much more simplified. In her newest series, she has kicked up the complication scale in her story telling and writing. But for Bek and Ellie's story, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars, which is super high praise, and well deserved. The only thing that had me grumbling was the story element of someone kept as a slave for 10 years, and treated horribly, to be pissed off for so long over the fact that she was removed from that environment. One would think that being removed from that situation, even if you were placed in a new situation that was also not one you had control over but was LEAGUES better than the one you came from, would be far more desirable. And would make one grateful, perhaps? These women were rescued, regardless of how Bek had to get them to his planet. I thought it was more of a rescue in this case, so all the women, including Ellie, weeping and crying (though Ellie's distress was much more silent) over their new lot in life, or the entire tribe shunning Bek for his decision, was a weaker story element in my opinion. I do understand though that the role of any leader is not an easy one to do, and even Bek states "If there were no rules, there would be no reason for a leader." So I get it, Vektal has to take action. That being said, I could not stop reading this story. The first time Ellie whispered "Safe" to Bek and slipped her hand in his, I literally shouted out an exclamation. I think I got a few strange looks my way in the library where I had gone to seek a quiet place to read. I think this story is one of her stronger ones, because the characters themselves have more internal change going on than prior characters. We have seen Bek as a surly ass or difficult stubborn ox through most of the series, and it wasn't until recently that the author started unfolding Bek a bit more and giving him layers. Characters with layers make the most interesting characters. Even Ellie had a compelling character transition throughout the book.Another story element that stood out as a bit odd...is throughout reading this series, I always had a sneaking suspicion that Bek would be a more dominating lover. And that aspect of him is why it never worked out with Claire. The entire story, he doesn't really show a hint of that aspect because he is letting Ellie set the pace the entire time...until bam, right at the end of the book when they are finally going to complete resonance, Bek is pulling out all this hot, sexually dominating stuff, i.e, putting her arms above her head and enforcing that she keeps them there, ordering her to look at the stars while he continues to pleasure her...everything he did in this scene was hot and steamy and very dominating...and yet to have it crop up right at the end of the book seemed to make it stand out a bit awkwardly in the flow of the overall story arc. I wish that aspect would have been woven into the story more, or the story allowed to be a bit longer so that these two could explore that a bit more. But even with those minor elements, I feel this is one of Ruby Dixon's strongest stories in this series based on character depth and progression for BOTH major characters. Thus, I give it 4 stars. Good job, Ruby! I shall be looking forward to more!
