Book Alpha Heat (Heat of Love Book 2) Review :

What I didn’t like about this book ... well, Xan. After a great start in Slow Heat - here, I ended up not liking him. And I think I know the reason. In this plot, he was the kind of character who depended too much on other characters to rescue him from his situation. In this alternate world, the word ‘unmanned’ is used (to describe gay), and I think that’s why I didn’t like Xan – as a character, he needed to man up, accept his sexuality and work on resolving his own problems! When combined with Xan’s issue, the rest of the plot was heavy and waaaaay too melodramatic. An alpha that can’t function as an alpha (OK, well, that plot was necessary). But adding an omega with sexual issues? A pandemic that forces ALL the characters and the subcharacters to share the same house? Nosy and/or nice servants? An omega’s heat coinciding with a subcharacter giving birth? Heavy parental control/disapproval? A cousin character who’s very obviously set up as the mc of the third book in the series – first as the bad guy, but by the end, a reformed guy? Cripes, why not add the Titanic striking the iceberg? A lot of this stuff could have been edited down or even excluded, which might have allowed more emotional connection between the two mc’s.Didn’t like Caleb as a personality, and as for his problem? – well frankly, it just wasn’t interesting to me. For me he existed solely as another rescuer for Xan, and the way he’s presented didn’t make him stand alone or stand out in my mind. He wasn’t someone I’d like to read more about, which is about the worst thing I think you can say about how a character is written. And finally, I didn’t like Uhro in this story, riding in like a white knight to rescue the beleaguered prince, Xan, from his problem (see paragraph one above). Nothing about their relationship felt right, it didn’t feel like it flowed from a logical place. All Uhro did throughout either book was help and rescue people and he never had a function or growth beyond that. All Xan did throughout either book (mostly this book) was feel terrible about himself and then be rescued. They were both too shallow. Sure, the s-e-x scenes were impressive but there was none of the strong emotional maturation that Jason and Vale reached in the first story of the series (Slow Heat). S-e-x without emotional connection is fine as a bodily function, but Uhro and Xan (and Uhro and Xan and Caleb) lacked a romantic subtext, in my opinion. Sad to say!I had a very difficult time finishing this book. In particular, the last third went off the charts with a nutty, actually kind of stupid, plot, what with the pandemic, and the birth and the heat combined. Maybe the author meant it all to be kind of humorous? – look at poor Uhro, having to cope with all this. But it read like an unedited mess and none of it hit any emotional feelings in me except for boredom at the way it dragged on. I ended up returning the book for a refund.
Another good addition to the Heat of Love series, Alpha Heat incorporates love between two alphas, something that’s considered a perversion in this world of omega’s bearing children for their alphas.Xan nearly broke my heart in the early stages of this book and I was so glad that Urho realised what he wanted – Xan, his “alpha-shaped omega.” I was also thankful that Urho backed Caleb to help Xan shake the belief that the “darkness” was what he deserved. The relationship between the three MCs – Xan, Caleb and Urho – is different to other books I’ve read with three people committed to one another. Xan and Urho are alphas and Caleb is Xan’s Omega, but Caleb is also asexual. It is not a ménage but it is a loving triad, one with a man as a willing conduit between the others whilst also feeling thoroughly connected on his terms.Jason and Vale get good page time, their serendipitous trip with Urho to Virona to be with Xan and Caleb during a deadly flu epidemic (and Vale’s pregnancy) was surreal reading, especially given this was written in 2018. There are other characters you get to know and enjoy – Ray, Xan’s older beta brother, for one. I’m guessing he has a book to come shortly.Xan gets to be who he is. Urho got more than he bargained for, and between a new love and heats and babies and flu, he had his work cut out for him.To sum up this review, Xan and Caleb and Urho have something very special in Alpha Heat and I loved revisiting all the people I grew to love in book #1, 5 Stars!
