Im getting a headache from all the pointless levelling and two dimensional fighting. All this idiotic power and nothing is learned no in debth wisdom is aquired no reaffirmationis obtained. The MC remains narcasistic. foolish and undefined as a character. Tao Wong can write better than this. I've been a huge fan of this series, especially the first three books. Book 5 and 6 were a distinct let down, and while book 7 is better even though it has it's own unique issues.The Good: We see John and Mikito in action again, facing other Master classers and even an assassination team. The action has always been a highlight of the System Apocalypse, and this book is no different. Yes, there are guilds but these are a means to an end, not something in and of themselves. Mikito continues to enter the arena, and it made me wonder why John wasn't doing the same as well.The not quite so good: In this book John comes across as a mixture of lazy, childish and sometimes more than a little stupid. No, he doesn't have experience with galactic politics outside of earth, but there was really no excuse for him to act this way. It's as if he's an American visiting Europe, and saying that the way we do things is better than the way they do things-- Right to their faces.My other issue is that despite all the action, the plot doesn't really go anywhere. They get to Irvina, they do a bunch of stuff in Irvina, and that's it. This book reads as a bridge to something else, something better that will happen in the future. Tao has said this is the start of a new story arc, but it's very light touch.Mikito is leveling like crazy in this book, as well she should. John is astounded by the progress she's making, but then does nothing about it. It's as if he's the ex-athlete who's days are behind him, and can now sit on his butt drinking 6 packs all day. It's obvious he needs help, but he does very little about it.I thought it was also a bit cruel to bring Lana back for those of us who thought they should have stayed together. Roxley is back as well, along with a few other names from the past.Overall, I enjoyed reading it even while I was thinking how much longer I want to stay on this ride. Book 7 is I think closer to book 4 in this case. Book 4 was a transitional book, but even then there was more action and plot happening there than happens in book 7.I don't want to give this a bad score, so I won't out of respect for the previous books Tao has graced us with.
