I hate not finishing books, it's against my entire belief system. But I caught myself sighing every time I picked up my kindle, thinking I have to slog it through with Mac (and Jordan) again, and so I gave myself permission to put it down. It's took me almost a week to get to 49%, when I usually read 2 books in that time.So, why didn't I like it? I didn't like Mac. I didn't find his internal dialogue amusing, I didn't find his pangs for Trevor or avoidance of Nick funny, I didn't relate to him. And Jordan just felt like a perfect cipher to me. A character to fall in love with our all so charming lead. Except if you don't love the lead, Jordan has no other characteristics - other than to be suspicious of his finance and appear to have no other emotional connection to her. Engagement is a big deal, I don't think you should be so open to new love once you are engaged to someone else. So nothing here really worked for me. Which is a shame, because I read P.S. I Spook You and loved it. I will try another from SE Harmon, but this one is a dud for me.I had it my tbr pile and reread. The second time I did get through it (so I upped the star rating to 3, which is my automatic minimum rating for a book I've completed) This time I liked Mackenzie more though still found Jordan a cipher. But the middle really did drag and the dilemma's didn't quite work for me. I like SE Harmon and read other of their works, I guess this one is a pass, but I would try the authors other books. I just can't get on board with all the 4 and 5 star reviews. Overall I like the writing, MOST of the story, and the banter/snark was great which is why I'm even giving it 3 stars. HOWEVER, by the end of the book I was screaming at Mackenzie and hating Jordan.*****SPOILER ALERT****** I know most people only consider it cheating when there is actually sex but Jordan came home an entire day early from an out of town trip, Mackenzie sees him having dinner with his "ex" laughing and kissing her hand. Later that night on the phone Jordan tells Mackenzie he is still OUT OF TOWN. I'm sorry but even if it's not cheating, HE LIED, and that part of the lie is NEVER confronted, he does explain the dinner but in my opinion he was in the wrong either way. He claims he went straight to the office to see Mackenzie because he couldn't wait to see him however he doesn't go home that night, instead he lies about where he is at when on the phone with Mackenzie and we never find out where he slept that night!!! The lie about still being out of town is never even brought up by Mackenzie but he just keeps blaming himself for the break up (after the dinner). I felt like in the end when Jordan says he won't keep "chasing" Mackenzie that he manipulates him into "agreeing" to the relationship and Mackenzie is so flippin insecure that he just rolls over.************END SPOILER******************The end of this book left me feeling that nothing was ever really resolved at all and that it was simply a HFN not a HEA.Maybe if the book had been from both POVs so that we knew more of what Jordan was thinking it wouldn't have been so aggrivating but he was still an jerk in my opinion.
