The only remaining hurdle is to strike a deal with the Transcend Interstellar Alliance and trade the Intrepid’s advanced technology for the star system. If only things were so easy. The Intrepid’s arrival has upset the delicate balance of power between the Transcend, the Orion Guard, and the Inner Stars. Everything Tanis has ever hoped for is at risk as she fights to build the colony of New Canaan amidst the looming specter of war.Book New Canaan: A Military Science Fiction Space Opera Epic (Aeon 14: The Orion War Book 2) Review :
This is the second book in the Orion War series by M. D. Cooper and follows on from the events of Destiny Lost. It is part of the wider Aeon14 universe. It was published in April 2017.In this book Tanis Richards and the crew of the Intrepid set up home in the Canaan star system which they bought from FGT/Transcend. They want a quiet life but their stasis shields and picotech pretty much guarantee that they’re not going to get it.I really enjoyed “Destiny Lost” and was looking forward to the second installment of the series. I read the editorial review and the book was compared to the Honor Harrington series. Uh oh. I read some of David Webber’s Honor Harrington books and whilst some were okay a lot of them were merely tedious and too full of their own cleverness. Time to be cautious. This is the story of the start of the Orion War. M. D. Cooper had to find a way to properly start the rest of the series. This would be a tall order for any author but it is harder here as he had to bring the audience into a complicated universe with four factions and some established characters. He also had to introduce characters that will be prominent later in the series. I presume this is the case as reading this second installment leads the reader to draw this conclusion. The result is a very messy, poorly structured book. The flow of chapters is poor and for most of the book the reader has no real idea of what is going on or why. Authors such as Iain M. Banks have tried something similar and it didn’t work for them; it doesn’t work for M. D. Cooper either. The overall plot and role of the characters within it is lost in the structure. There are some good ideas here but they are buried in random chapters about space accidents or shifts between locations and times. It was a very cheap trick to keep referring to the adventures of the Sabrina and then not bring that in until the very last pages. It was particularly insulting to find out that there was a separate series of books required to find out what had happened to Sabrina and its crew in the interim. There may be some need to have all this introduction in one book but it comes across badly and seems to follow the worst of Michael Anderle’s style – Got an idea? Shovel it in. Need this later? Shovel it in. This is not a good book. There are some good moments. M. D. Cooper writes combat pretty well and has a good grasp of the technology in his universe. This book would have benefitted from some dictatorial editing. Editing might have fixed the typos too. I also like the glossaries in the back and wish more authors would do that.Writing a foundation novel for a series of books isn’t easy but this isn’t the way to go about it eithr. I suspect you could skip this and go straight from Destiny Lost to Orion rising. At least I hope so as Orion Rising is next on my list. Space battles, politics and backstabbing, both predicted and not and fascinating technology (I love the AIs!), ah what more can a sci-fi fan want? *happy sigh* i'm so glad I picked up the first book of the Orion War on sale on Audible a few months back.New Canaan expands on what I already knew of the Aeon 14 universe (it's part of a bigger series but unfortunately I had no idea prior to picking Destiny Lost) both with additional characters and planets. The one thing that tends to confuse me is the dating but it's probably just because while listening to a narration I tend to space out on numbers. If it was a physical copy I could easily leaf through and make sense of the dating system but I guess I'll have to accept on faith alone that it makes sense in-universe. The story is complicated so a reader needs to pay attention, especially with all the time jumps and POV changes. The complexity of the entities that try to play God with the fate of humanity makes this truly exceptional in that you're never sure who the "good guys" are, apart from the Intrepid crew. So you end up making your own attachments to certain characters and even at the end of book 2 you're unsure if you've made the right choice. So would I recommend this to other readers? Absolutely yes! But only if you like your space opera with a lot of backstage machinations and you're not in only for the space battles.
